Google has expanded its Google Vids platform to include custom AI avatars, allowing users to generate digital representations of themselves using a selfie and a voice recording. The update, announced on Thursday, also integrates the company’s multimodal AI model, Gemini Omni, to enhance video creation capabilities.
New AI avatars and enhanced editing
The latest iteration of Google Vids enables users to produce videos by combining written prompts with reference images, which Gemini Omni then synthesises into a final output. Additionally, the tool now supports step-by-step edits, permitting incremental adjustments without requiring a full restart.
Beyond its original function as an AI-assisted presentation tool, the platform now offers features such as background replacement, lighting correction, and special effects for user-uploaded videos. These enhancements position Google Vids as a more versatile video creation suite, competing with dedicated AI video platforms like HeyGen and Synthesia.
Safety and accessibility measures
Google has implemented safeguards for the new AI avatars, tying them to the account holder’s Google profile and embedding invisible watermarks via SynthID to prevent misuse. Access to the feature is currently restricted to users aged 18 or older in select regions.
The integration of Google Vids into Google Workspace underscores its intended use for professional applications, including corporate updates and training materials. However, the addition of personalised avatars and conversational editing tools may broaden its appeal to a wider audience.
