According to court documents, these groups often target elderly or vulnerable homeowners, employing charm and deception to secure contracts for unnecessary or fraudulent repairs. Their tactics can escalate to aggression if homeowners resist their demands.

Details of the Fatal Confrontation

On July 8, workmen heard an argument emanating from Barr’s house before Hanrahan staggered outside with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Police discovered bloodstains leading from the property, a rifle with a bayonet attached inside the house, and an invoice for $70,000, significantly higher than the estimated cost for the vinyl cladding work.

Neighbors reported that Barr had paid a $5,000 down payment to Hanrahan, who repeatedly requested additional funds. Tensions reportedly increased when Barr discovered damage to his roof, which he believed was caused by the workers.
