A Canadian woman intern at NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Belgium has been arrested on charges of spying for a third country and belonging to a criminal organization, Belgian federal prosecutors announced Saturday.
NATO Intern Accused of Espionage
The woman worked at SHAPE, NATO’s top military headquarters located in Mons, Belgium. Prosecutors stated she is suspected of spying and being part of a criminal group. Details about her identity or the country she allegedly spied for were not released.
Belgian authorities apprehended the suspect on Friday after SHAPE’s security services flagged her to intelligence officials. Investigators searched her home and her workplace at the military headquarters.
SHAPE Operations Unaffected
A spokesperson for SHAPE confirmed that the arrest has not impacted the alliance’s operational readiness or command and control functions. The spokesperson stated that SHAPE continues its duties without interruption.
The Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office indicated that no further comments would be made as the investigation progresses.
