A social media influencer was fatally shot by her estranged husband in Owasso, Oklahoma, less than two weeks after she posted on TikTok accusing him of pedophilia. Police identified the victim as Sara Gilson, 43, and the shooter as her husband, Jeremiah Duffey, who also went by Shawn Duffey online.
Social Media Post Preceded Fatal Shooting
Gilson posted a video on TikTok on July 11, accusing Duffey of pedophilia. She had over 30,000 followers on the platform. The video referenced a trend mimicking Netflix documentaries, with Gilson writing, "Preparing for when Netflix drops a documentary about my soon to be ex husband who I just found out is a pedophile."
This social media post came after Gilson had filed and been granted an emergency protective order against Duffey on June 10. Police had informed her that Duffey had been accused of molesting a minor the day prior.
Allegations of Child Molestation
The initial accusation against Duffey surfaced on June 9, when a girl and her parent reported to police that he had inappropriately touched the child. Duffey coached the girl’s traveling basketball team. Another coach witnessed the incident and intervened, reporting it to the girl's parent.
Police stated that similar conduct by Duffey towards this juvenile player had been reported in multiple jurisdictions and states over an extended period. Because Duffey is a member of the Osage tribe and the incident occurred on tribal land, the case was submitted to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for review regarding a charge of lewd molestation of a minor. Owasso Police Department’s jurisdiction ended at that point.
Protective Order and Domestic Incident
Following the police report, Gilson sought and received an emergency protective order on June 10, according to Tulsa County court records. The order required Duffey to remain 100 yards away from Gilson and her home. Duffey's attorney did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
On Thursday, officers responded to a 911 call reporting domestic violence at a Collinsville residence. Dispatchers heard screaming and what sounded like a gunshot before the call disconnected. A boy then called 911 from a neighbor's home stating his stepfather had shot his mother.
Investigation into Murder-Suicide
Upon arrival, officers found both Gilson and Duffey deceased from apparent gunshot wounds to the head. Police are investigating the incident and believe it to be a murder-suicide. Gilson leaves behind a son and a daughter.
An online fundraiser for Gilson's children described her as an "incredible mom" whose children were her priority. The fundraiser stated she "worked hard to provide for them, and dreamed of giving them the best life possible."
