The incident unfolded at approximately 4:46 a.m. on Monday, when Toronto Police Operations reported hearing gunshots near the U.S. Consulate. Responding officers located evidence of a shooting outside the premises, with a white sedan observed leaving the area. At this time, no suspect description has been provided by the authorities, and crucially, no injuries have been reported in connection with the event.
Background of Previous Incidents
This latest event at the U.S. Consulate follows a pattern of similar incidents earlier this year. In March, the consulate was targeted in a shooting that American authorities have since linked to an alleged international campaign orchestrated by Iranian-backed groups against targets in both Europe and North America. An Iraqi national residing in the U.S. is currently facing terrorism-related charges in connection with that March 10 incident.
Related Arrests and Investigations
The investigation into past events has also led to significant developments in Toronto. Last month, an 18-year-old man named Sheldon Tracy-Stewart was arrested and charged with 11 offences, including discharging a firearm, illegal firearm possession, and vehicle theft. Court documents indicate that Mr. Tracy-Stewart was reportedly under a release order at the time of his apprehension, leading to an additional charge of failing to comply with a release order under the Criminal Code.
Furthermore, the probe into prior incidents saw the tragic death of a veteran Toronto police officer. Const. Marc Pinizzotto, a member of the Emergency Task Force, was shot at while assisting in a raid connected to the ongoing investigation. In relation to this, Nicholas Bennett, a 19-year-old man, has been charged with first-degree murder.
