Three federal byelections will be held on August 31, with votes cast in ridings across British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec. The announcement by Prime Minister Mark Carney sets the stage for new parliamentary representation in Beaches-East York, Chicoutimi-Le Fjord, and North Vancouver-Capilano.

Federal Byelections Triggered by Vacancies

The upcoming byelections follow the recent departure of three Members of Parliament from their respective seats. These vacancies arose for distinct reasons: one MP resigned from politics, another accepted an ambassadorship to the European Union, and a third was appointed to the Senate.

This marks the latest in a series of electoral contests this year, coming just three months after three other Ontario ridings saw voters go to the polls. Those prior byelections resulted in the Liberals securing three additional MPs, reinforcing the government's majority achieved after the 2015 general election.

Key Ridings Head to the Polls

The riding of Beaches-East York in Ontario became vacant when Nate Erskine-Smith stepped down earlier this month. Erskine-Smith, who had held the seat since 2015, had previously indicated his intention to resign regardless of the outcome of a recent provincial nomination bid and is now considering a run for Toronto city council.

In British Columbia, North Vancouver-Capilano’s seat is open after longtime Liberal MP Jonathan Wilkinson was appointed Canada's EU ambassador. Wilkinson, a former cabinet minister, resigned from Parliament last month. The Liberals have held this riding since 2015.

Chicoutimi-Le Fjord in Quebec is also holding a byelection after Richard Martel was appointed to the Senate by Prime Minister Carney. This riding has seen shifts between the Bloc Quebecois, NDP, Liberals, and Conservatives in recent decades.

Parliamentary Seat Distribution

Following these vacancies, the current parliamentary seat distribution stands as follows:

  • Liberals: 172 seats
  • Conservatives: 139 seats
  • Bloc Quebecois: 21 seats
  • NDP: 5 MPs
  • Green Party: 1 MP
  • Independent: 1 MP

Additionally, the riding of Saint-Hyacinthe-Bagot-Acton in Quebec remains vacant due to the departure of former Bloc MP Simon-Pierre Savard Tremblay from politics. Elections Canada notes that a byelection in that riding could occur no earlier than August 10 and no later than December 19.
