The Toronto Argonauts halted their three-game losing streak Saturday, defeating the B.C. Lions 26-12 at BC Place Stadium. Backup quarterback Nick Arbuckle stepped in for an injured Chad Kelly and guided the team to the crucial Canadian Football League victory.
Arbuckle Delivers Under Pressure
Called into action late in the first half, Nick Arbuckle completed 13 of 20 passes for 134 yards to help secure the win for Toronto. Despite not throwing any touchdowns, his steady performance, coupled with leading the team in rushing with 28 yards on two carries, was key for the Argonauts.
"It’s never easy because you never have any reps (in practice) to really work the game plan and stuff," Arbuckle stated after the game. He expressed enjoyment in playing with his receivers again and competing alongside them.
Lidster's Strong CFL Debut
Rookie kicker Brady Lidster also played a significant role in the Argonauts' win, making four of his five field goal attempts in his first CFL game. Lidster, filling in for veteran Lirim Hajrullahu, successfully kicked field goals from 48, 47, 37, and 24 yards.
Arbuckle praised Lidster's composure, noting, "I made a point to really talk to him all week and try to install some confidence and belief in him." Lidster's performance highlighted depth in the Argonauts' special teams.
Lions Struggle Continues
The B.C. Lions' struggles continued as they fell to a 1-5 record, remaining at the bottom of the West Division. Quarterback Chase Brice, making his first CFL start in place of the injured Nathan Rourke, completed 14 of 25 passes for 163 yards. Brice acknowledged missed opportunities, stating, "I left some stuff out there and we wanted to make more plays."
Sean Whyte was the sole scorer for the Lions, kicking four field goals from 34, 30, 27, and 17 yards. B.C. linebacker Darnell Sankey expressed frustration with the team's defensive performance, calling the 373 yards of offence allowed "unacceptable."
Key Plays and Incidents
Toronto's initial lead was established by starter Chad Kelly, who threw two touchdown passes to receiver Makai Polk for 19 and 44 yards before leaving the game due to an injury sustained from a late hit by B.C. linebacker Darnell Sankey. Polk also left the game temporarily in the third quarter after a hit from B.C. defensive back Stantley Thomas-Oliver but returned.
Looking Ahead
The Argonauts, now 3-4, will host the Calgary Stampeders on Thursday, August 6. The B.C. Lions are set to visit the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Thursday.
