Despite existing recommendations that advise against routine use, approximately 20% of eczema patients in the UK currently take antihistamines. While NICE guidance permits their use in specific instances, such as when flare-ups are associated with hives or other allergic reactions, or for short-term sedation to manage sleep disturbance due to severe itching, the new research casts doubt on their general effectiveness.

Evidence Against Antihistamine Efficacy

A review conducted by Canadian experts, encompassing 47 trials involving over 6,200 individuals with moderate to severe eczema, compared antihistamines against a placebo. The results indicated that antihistamines led to a "clinically unimportant reduction" in eczema severity and itchiness.

Furthermore, the study suggests that these medications may not effectively reduce sleep disturbance or eczema flare-ups. First-generation antihistamines, often associated with drowsiness, also carry the risk of cognitive impairment and may prompt patients to discontinue treatment due to adverse side effects.
