Vancouver has named a group led by real estate developer Zack Ross as its preferred partner to pursue a Major League Baseball expansion franchise, marking a key step toward bringing an MLB team to the city.

The decision follows a spring expression-of-interest process launched by Mayor Ken Sim, seeking a financially capable ownership group to advance the bid. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred has previously indicated the league aims to expand from 30 to 32 teams before his planned 2029 retirement, though no formal expansion plans have been announced.

Proposal Centers on New Ballpark, Mixed-Use Development

The selected group, The Show Vancouver (TSV), is fronted by Ross, president of Cape Group, and includes partnerships with sports marketing firm BRS Sports, architecture firm Populous, and project management company CAA Icon. The proposal hinges on a new ballpark and adjacent development, though no site or cost estimates have been disclosed.

“Vancouver is one of the great cities in the world, and we deserve a Major League Baseball team,” Ross said in a statement. The city confirmed it will enter a memorandum of understanding with TSV to establish a collaboration framework, including due diligence for potential ballpark locations. All future agreements, including site selection and land-use decisions, remain subject to council approval.

Financial Risks and Next Steps

The city clarified that TSV will bear all costs and financial risks associated with preparing and advancing the MLB bid. Vancouver last hosted MLB exhibition games at BC Place Stadium between 1984 and 1994, but a $500-million renovation in 2011 eliminated its ability to accommodate baseball.

TSV’s team includes former NHL executive Jac Sperling, sports venue consultant Tim Romani, and Denver real estate executive Ray Baker. The group has secured endorsements from the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade and former B.C. premier Mike Harcourt. Vancouver currently hosts the single-A Vancouver Canadians, a Blue Jays affiliate playing at 6,500-seat Nat Bailey Stadium.
