London — Enigma, a research lab emerging from stealth, has secured $70 million in seed funding to develop intuitive interfaces for controlling robots, aiming to make human-robot interaction as effortless as adjusting a car's volume knob. The company is exploring novel approaches to artificial intelligence for robotics, focusing on user experience rather than solely on model capabilities.

Enigma's Approach to Robot Interaction

Rather than solely concentrating on the computational power of artificial intelligence models, Enigma is investigating how humans engage with robots. The objective is to foster the development of interfaces that are inherently intuitive, potentially leading to a new paradigm for robotic cognition.

This approach diverges from other robotics companies that are training foundation models by studying vast quantities of online videos, utilising computer simulations, or collecting motion data from human operators using sensor-equipped gloves. Enigma's focus is on the interaction itself as the catalyst for innovation.

Large-Scale Experiment to Gather Data

To facilitate its research, Enigma is initiating a broad experiment accessible to individuals globally. Participants will be able to interact online with over 100 of Enigma's proprietary AI robots. These robots are housed in facilities located in Israel and California.

The robots are designed to perform a range of tasks, including painting with a brush, engaging in simulated combat with swords, and conducting basic chemistry experiments by manipulating flasks containing liquids. Enigma asserts that both the robotic arms and their core AI models have been developed internally.

Founders and Team Expertise

Enigma was co-founded by Jonathan Jacobi, formerly Microsoft's youngest employee, and his long-time associate Gal Niv. The founders' shared history includes competing in hacking competitions as teenagers and subsequently serving together in Israel's Unit 8200, where they conducted cybersecurity research.

Recognising AI for robotics as a field with significant unsolved challenges, Jacobi and Niv assembled a team comprised of individuals from Israel's technology sector. This team includes alumni from prominent AI research laboratories, winners of mathematics Olympiads, and individuals who have deferred doctoral studies.

Industry Perspective on Enigma's Strategy

Shardul Shah, a partner at Index Ventures, highlighted Enigma's distinct position. "There are a lot of robotics industry insiders participating in the next wave of embodied intelligence, but Jonathan and Gal are outsiders — they’re not roboticists. It affords them more room for originality," Shah stated. He added that while industry insiders might initially focus on capabilities like teleoperation or dexterity, Enigma prioritises "the ultimate experience."

The Goal: Effortless Robot Control

Jonathan Jacobi articulated Enigma's ambition: to render human-robot interactions entirely seamless. He posited that the current level of complexity in controlling robots, which often requires extensive instruction, leads to user frustration and a preference for performing tasks manually.

"Right now, everyone is at that point — even with the most capable models," Jacobi remarked, illustrating the difficulty with an analogy. He believes that the process of manipulating robots should eventually be as straightforward as adjusting a car's volume control, contrasting it with scenarios where users might adjust volume by unspecific percentages without a clear outcome.

Future Implications and Business Use Cases

The data generated from Enigma's online experiment is intended to identify an interface that could become the standard for robot interaction, akin to a car's volume knob. The public test will explore various communication methods between humans and robots, such as text, audio, video demonstrations, or direct manipulation interfaces.

Jacobi acknowledged the open-ended nature of the experiment, expressing the hope that collecting real-world interaction data will yield not only superior interfaces but also improved methods for training their foundational AI model. While specific business applications remain undisclosed, Enigma has indicated partnerships with companies in healthcare, logistics, and entertainment sectors.
