Snapchat has introduced a new feature allowing users to share the music they are listening to in real time through its Snap Map platform. Called "Now Playing," the tool integrates with Spotify, enabling users to display their current tracks and see what friends are listening to.
How the Now Playing Feature Works
The update links a user’s Spotify account to Snapchat, broadcasting their listening activity on Snap Map. Friends can view these updates, while users retain control over who sees their activity. The feature does not reveal listening history or last-played songs, and sharing automatically pauses after 24 hours of inactivity.
Users can also save songs discovered in Snapchat’s Spotlight videos directly to Spotify. This mirrors similar functionality on TikTok and Instagram, where music sharing has become a key part of social engagement.
Expanding Snap Map’s Capabilities
Snap Map, which launched in 2017, originally focused on location sharing and public Snaps. With over 450 million monthly users, it has since evolved to include local hotspots, activities, and now music discovery. The addition of "Now Playing" aligns with broader trends in social media, where platforms increasingly prioritise music integration.
Manny Adler, Snapchat’s head of music, said: “Music is one of the most personal ways people express themselves, and it becomes even more meaningful when it brings friends closer.” The feature is rolling out in regions where both Snapchat and Spotify are available, with Canada next in line.
