A former Hertfordshire teacher has been convicted of eight counts of gross indecency with a child after grooming and sexually abusing a 10-year-old schoolboy in the 1990s, a jury at St Albans Crown Court has ruled.

Deborah Franklin, 65, who taught at an independent preparatory school where annual fees now exceed £18,000, was found guilty of offences committed between 1991 and 1995. The victim, now in his 40s, described how Franklin manipulated him over several years, including incidents where she blindfolded and tied him to a bed before engaging in sexual acts.

Grooming and abuse spanning four years

The court heard that Franklin, who worked as a private tutor after leaving the school, exploited her position of authority to blur professional boundaries. The victim, from a wealthy family, initially viewed her as a close friend and mentor before the relationship escalated into sexual abuse.

In a video-recorded police interview, the complainant recalled Franklin discussing adult topics—including drugs, cigarettes, and sex—with him when he was just nine years old. He described her as "ever present" in his family home, where she spent significant time outside school hours. Photographs shown to the jury depicted an unusually close relationship, including images of Franklin holding hands with the boy on a school trip and sitting on his bed.

The abuse began after Franklin won a bet with the pupil, who suggested a "childish" prize. Instead, she responded: "Because I would have thought you wanted to see me without my clothes on." The first physical incident occurred in a den in the family garage, where Franklin instructed the boy to touch her. Over time, the abuse escalated to oral sex and intercourse, with the victim recalling "dozens" of encounters.

Victim’s testimony and family corroboration

The prosecution’s case relied heavily on the victim’s detailed account, which was corroborated by family members and a school friend. His elder sister told the court she had seen Franklin in bed with the boy, reading to him under the covers. His brother recalled Franklin discussing sexual matters with him, while a friend confirmed the unusually close bond between teacher and pupil.

The victim disclosed the abuse to his father before his 13th birthday, though no police report was made at the time to avoid disrupting his bar mitzvah. He later confided in a doctor and a girlfriend in the early 2000s, with these early disclosures strengthening the credibility of his testimony. He finally contacted police in March 2024 after learning Franklin was still working with children.

Franklin, who had been working for the RSPB after leaving teaching, was remanded in custody ahead of sentencing. Her barrister requested bail to "put her affairs in order," but Judge Mr Justice Choudhry refused, citing the seriousness of the offences.

Detective Constable Liz McGrath of Hertfordshire Police praised the victim’s bravery, stating: "This case demonstrates that however long ago a crime happened, we are committed to getting justice for victims." The force urged anyone affected by historical abuse to come forward, emphasising that specialist support is available through the Herts Sexual Assault Referral Centre.

Franklin, who attended court wearing dark glasses and a headscarf, showed little emotion as the verdicts were delivered. She will be sentenced under the sentencing guidelines in place at the time of the offences.
