New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing sharp criticism after vowing to attempt the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his planned visit to the UN General Assembly in September.
Politicians Condemn Mamdani’s Netanyahu Arrest Threat
Brooklyn City Councilwoman Inna Vernikov, a GOP member, called Mamdani’s comments “illegally meddling in foreign affairs” and urged U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to intervene. In a letter, she argued that Mamdani’s threat could violate U.S. law and warrant federal action.
Vernikov stated, “The Mayor of New York City does not recognize the jurisdiction of the United States of America and will do anything he can to subvert our Constitutional Republic.” She requested a State Department warning on potential legal consequences.
Brooklyn state Assemblyman Kalman Yeger labeled Mamdani’s stance as “delusional,” while Democratic Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman dismissed the threat as empty posturing, saying, “He has no way to do that.”
Former NYC Mayor and Israeli Official Weigh In
Former New York City Mayor Eric Adams criticized Mamdani’s approach, stating, “Threatening to arrest the democratically elected leader of one of America’s closest allies during U.N. General Assembly week isn’t bold. It’s reckless.”
Shosh Bedrosian, a former New Yorker and Israel’s recent representative for the prime minister’s office, defended Netanyahu, asserting he “deserves respect as the elected leader of a democratic ally of the United States.”
Mamdani, undeterred, told the New York Times he believes Netanyahu “belongs in The Hague” and confirmed ongoing discussions about detaining the PM during his Manhattan visit.
