ESPN NFL draft analyst Matt Miller lost an arm in a June 17 car crash after his Ford Bronco crossed the centerline and hit a truck near his Missouri home. The accident, which ejected Miller from the vehicle, has intensified scrutiny over allegations he scammed fantasy football players out of prize money.
A friend, Kevin Smith, told The Athletic that Miller said in a June 30 conversation: “I wasn’t distracted. I lost control of my car. I don’t know what happened.” Miller also stated that bloodwork would show he was not under the influence of alcohol or marijuana at the time.
Investigations into the crash and fraud claims
Missouri State Highway Patrol’s post-crash report noted it was unclear whether Miller was impaired. Meanwhile, the Missouri Attorney General’s Office has received 26 complaints about Miller since opening its probe into his fantasy football operations.
Miller hosted 91 fantasy leagues on Sleeper last season, according to search tools cited by The Athletic. The platform banned him for “stealing buy-ins from managers and not paying out league winners.” Estimates suggest he had access to around $100,000 in entry fees, though Miller called that figure “not accurate” in an email.
ESPN leave and payout promises
Miller announced on June 10 he was taking a leave from ESPN “to best focus on my healing and recovery.” The network confirmed it was a “mutually agreed-upon leave” and is aware of the allegations, including the attorney general’s investigation.
Miller told The Athletic he has worked to repay winners, though limited access to his email and social media accounts has complicated the process. He stated: “Everyone who finished in first, second or third place will be paid out.” Just hours before the crash, he confirmed with a league member, Andy Sunday, that a payout had been sent.
