This year's selection for the prestigious Booker Prize longlist showcases a broad spectrum of literary talent, with 13 books making the cut. The announcement included notable returns from previous laureates, underscoring the enduring quality of established authors.
Douglas Stuart, who secured the prize in 2020 for his novel Shuggie Bain, and Marlon James, the 2015 winner for A Brief History of Seven Killings, are both represented on this year's list. Elizabeth Strout also features as a three-time nominee for her latest publication, The Things We Never Say.
Debut Authors and Judging Panel
Significantly, the 2025 Booker Prize longlist also embraces emerging voices, with three debut authors earning a place among the contenders. Mary Beard, chair of the Booker Prize 2026 judges, highlighted the collective strength of the selected works.
In a statement, Beard remarked, "Every writer on our longlist brilliantly musters the power of words on the page to take the reader to new places, to see old places from new angles, to change minds."
Booker Prize Details and Next Steps
The Booker Prize is awarded annually to a book published in English in the UK and/or Ireland between October 1 and September 30. The 2025 prize ceremony is scheduled to take place in London on November 9, where the winner will be announced.
- Six shortlisted authors will each receive £2,500 (approximately $3,300).
- The ultimate winner will be awarded £50,000 (a little more than $66,000).
