In a landmark achievement for Chinese women in mathematics, Hong Wang has become the first woman from China to be awarded the prestigious Fields Medal, the world's most esteemed prize in the field. This year's ceremony in Philadelphia also saw another mathematician from China, Yu Deng, receive the award, bringing the total number of Chinese-born medalists to three.
Fields Medal: A Coveted Mathematics Honour
The Fields Medal, often likened to the Nobel Prize for mathematics, is bestowed every four years by the International Mathematical Union (IMU) to between two and four mathematicians under the age of 40, recognising both their established achievements and their future potential. This year marked only the third occasion in the award's 90-year history that a woman has been honoured.
The 2024 recipients, presented at the opening of the International Congress of Mathematicians, included Hong Wang and Yu Deng from China, John Pardon from the United States, and Jacob Tsimerman of Canada. Ulrike Tillmann, vice-president and incoming president of the IMU, remarked that all four mathematicians had made "tremendous contributions," adding, "It's also wonderful to see another woman winning the Medal. We should have the feeling that it has become a normal thing that women contribute to their fields at the highest level, including the Fields Medal."
Historic Dual Chinese Recognition
Hong Wang, originally from Guilin City, has achieved global recognition for her work, particularly for resolving the century-old Kakeya conjecture in three dimensions alongside Joshua Zahl of the University of British Columbia. This significant contribution, as noted by the IMU, "has opened the door for a host of theorems and conjectures in harmonic analysis, partial differential equations, geometric measure theory and other fields."
The simultaneous award to Wang and Yu Deng represents the first instance of two Chinese scholars receiving the Fields Medal in the same year. Previous Chinese-born recipients include Yau Shing-Tung, who won in 1982, and Terence Tao, who received the award in 2006.
Yu Deng, hailing from Shenzhen, was recognised for his groundbreaking research in axiomatising physics, establishing mathematical rules to explain scientific branches. The IMU described his key paper, co-authored with Zaher Hani and Xiao Ma, as "a leap forward in a centuries-long quest by mathematicians and physicists to derive the basic laws of physics from first principles." American mathematician John Pardon was cited for his work in topology and geometry, while Canada's Jacob Tsimerman was acknowledged for advancing logical frameworks in algebraic geometry.
Online Reactions and National Reflection
News of the Fields Medal laureates, which had been prematurely revealed due to a website vulnerability, was met with widespread celebration on Chinese social media platforms. Users expressed pride and excitement, with one noting, "Two Chinese mathematicians! And one is a Chinese woman!" Another commented, "This is what you call truly bringing honor to your country."
However, the fact that both Wang and Deng, despite commencing their higher education at Peking University, pursued their advanced studies and research careers in the United States and Europe has prompted reflection among some on Chinese internet forums. Questions were raised about China's research environment and the reasons behind the emigration of talented students after their undergraduate studies.
Despite these discussions about a potential "brain drain," the awards arrive as China actively seeks to bolster its scientific and technological capabilities. Initiatives such as Beijing's "K-visa" and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's QiMing project aim to attract foreign and overseas Chinese STEM talent. It is worth noting that Wang and Deng's professional lives are currently based outside of China.
The Prize and Its Enduring Allure
Each Fields Medalist receives a gold medal designed with an image of Archimedes and a cash prize of 15,000 Canadian dollars (approximately $11,000 USD). Yet, for recipients like Yu Deng, the motivation transcends material reward.
Deng articulated this sentiment, stating, "Our understanding of the physical universe on the mathematical level is still extremely small. The thing that keeps me in this field is the happiness when your plan works perfectly, [and] you are able to solve the questions you are faced with." This pursuit of knowledge and the satisfaction of overcoming complex challenges remain the driving forces for mathematicians at the pinnacle of their profession.
