Netflix has acquired InterPositive, the AI filmmaking startup co-founded by actor and director Ben Affleck, in a cash deal valued at $587 million. The purchase, disclosed in a recent regulatory filing, follows the streaming giant’s March announcement of the agreement, though financial details were not revealed at the time.
Ben Affleck’s role in the Netflix AI deal
Affleck, who co-founded InterPositive, will serve as a senior advisor to Netflix following the acquisition. The company, whose AI tools assist filmmakers in post-production, addresses challenges such as missing shots, background replacements, or lighting corrections. In a statement, Affleck emphasised his commitment to “protect the power of human creativity” while leveraging the technology.
Financial and operational details
While Netflix initially withheld the financial terms of the deal, a subsequent report by Bloomberg estimated its potential value at up to $600 million. The entire InterPositive team has joined Netflix as part of the agreement.
Netflix has already integrated generative AI into its production processes, with around 300 titles utilising the technology to date.
