The 41-year-old suspect allegedly sought weatherman Al Roker before confronting Melvin in a stairway, according to reports. Sources told Page Six that Truelove hurled a racial slur at Melvin in the brief moments before his arrest. The NYPD is investigating the incident, and NBC stated it is cooperating fully with law enforcement.
Melvin addressed the security breach on Friday’s broadcast, saying, “Thankfully he was apprehended quickly. He was placed under arrest. We are cooperating fully with the NYPD as they investigate the matter.” He later reassured viewers on Instagram, writing, “I’m doing just fine. Thanks for reaching out.”
Security Review Underway at NBC
NBC emphasized in a statement that it takes the safety of employees “extremely seriously” and is reviewing security protocols. The network confirmed it is working with authorities to ensure a “safe and secure environment” for staff and visitors. A security guard was reportedly fired following the incident.
Truelove has eight prior unsealed arrests in New York City, primarily for mischief, according to The Post. The incident has left Today show staffers “on edge,” particularly amid ongoing concerns following the February abduction of Savannah Guthrie’s mother, Nancy Guthrie.
