Daredevils Angela Nikolau and Ivan Kuznetsov have retrieved their engagement ring after their arrest for scaling the Empire State Building in a viral New York City engagement stunt. The couple, who were granted supervised release, thanked Manhattan prosecutors for the return of their belongings.
Empire State Building Stunt Leads to Arrests
Nikolau, who identifies as a "neoartist exploring identity, fear & freedom," shared photos on Instagram Monday showcasing the recovered ring alongside images from the July 1 feat. The pair scaled the skyscraper more than 1,000 feet in the air, unfurling a banner that read, "When the power of love beats the love of power the world knows peace."
Legal Proceedings and Potential Penalties
Despite the recovery of their ring and other possessions, including passports and bank cards, the couple faces significant legal repercussions. They are scheduled to appear in court again on August 24. If convicted of the charges, which include felonies such as burglary, reckless endangerment, and criminal mischief, Nikolau and Kuznetsov could be sentenced to up to seven years in prison.
The pair, residing in East Orange, New Jersey, allegedly gained access to the 103rd floor, typically used for maintenance, by breaching a mesh gate on the 102nd floor. Visual evidence of the ascent from their perspective atop the Empire State Building was posted on Nikolau's Instagram page.
Defense Challenges Charges
The defense attorney for the couple, Jason Krinsky, has argued that prosecutors have overcharged the case. Krinsky stated that building personnel confirmed no risk to tenants or visitors, and that no burglary tools were found. He characterized the climb as a "message of love."
Nikolau and Kuznetsov gained further public attention as subjects of the 2024 Netflix documentary "Skywalkers: A Love Story," which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
