Gunfire was reported near the U.S. consulate in downtown Toronto on Monday morning. Police confirmed the sound of a firearm discharging in the area, prompting an immediate investigation.
Toronto Consulate Incident Under Scrutiny
The Toronto Police Service responded to the incident at 4:46 a.m. Officers located evidence of a firearm being discharged outside the building at 360 University Avenue. A white sedan was seen fleeing the scene, but authorities could not provide a suspect description.
No individuals sustained injuries during the morning's events. University Avenue remains closed to both pedestrian and vehicular traffic at Dundas Street as the investigation progresses.
Previous Consulate Attack Context
This marks the second shooting incident targeting the U.S. consulate in Toronto. In March, the building was struck by gunfire, an event described at the time as a "national security incident."
Three individuals have since been arrested and charged in connection with the March shooting. Police allege these individuals were hired to attack the consulate, as well as Jewish schools and synagogues in the Toronto area, and facilities belonging to GFL Environmental Inc.
Arrests and Charges Following March Shooting
The arrests in the March incident led to further charges. Constable Marc Pinizzotto, 43, was killed during the arrest of Nicholas Bennett, 19. Bennett now faces a first-degree murder charge, in addition to multiple firearm offenses.
Sheldon Tracey-Stewart, 18, and Zara Jabbi, 19, were also charged with multiple firearm offenses in relation to the March shooting.
Authorities have not yet specified if Monday's incident was a targeted attack similar to the March event. Further details are anticipated later today from police at the scene.
