Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha Vance, announced the birth of their fourth child, Alec Neel Vance, on Sunday at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.
In a statement posted on X, the couple confirmed the arrival of their son, noting that both mother and baby are "happy and healthy." Their three older children—Ewan, 9, Vivek, 6, and Mirabel, 4—were said to be "overjoyed" to meet their new brother.
First vice-presidential family birth in over a century
This marks the first time in modern U.S. history that a sitting vice president and second lady have welcomed a child while in office. The last recorded instance was in 1870, when Vice President Schuyler Colfax Jr. and his wife, Ellen, had their son Schuyler Colfax III.
Inspiration behind the fourth child
In his recent book, Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith, Vance revealed he had long asked his wife to have another child, but she had initially declined due to the family’s public profile. Her perspective shifted after the death of Charlie Kirk, a close friend whose widow, Erika Kirk, expressed regret over not having more children with her late husband.
"Something changed for Usha, and not long after we buried my friend, she became pregnant with our fourth child, a boy. One life was stolen from us, but another was given," Vance wrote. In a CBS Sunday Morning interview, Usha Vance called Erika Kirk’s remarks "very powerful" and acknowledged they influenced an ongoing conversation between her and her husband.
