The Marine Animal Response Society, a non-profit organization, confirmed the multiple sightings on social media over the weekend. The group stated that the solitary orca appeared to be in good condition. The Canso Causeway connects mainland Nova Scotia to Cape Breton Island.
Conservationists Urge Caution for Boaters
In response to the sightings, the Marine Animal Response Society has issued a directive to boaters, requesting that they maintain a considerable distance from the animal. Federal regulations mandate that vessels remain at least 100 meters from any whale to minimize disturbance.
The conservation society reported receiving numerous accounts of vessels approaching the whale. This information has been formally relayed to the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans.
