A 53-year-old man has been charged following an incident Saturday where his motorhome breached a perimeter fence and entered an active runway at Abbotsford International Airport.
Motorhome Disrupts Abbotsford Airport Operations
Abbotsford Police Department officers responded to the airport at 4:36 p.m. on July 25 after receiving reports of the breach. Airport staff were the first to address the situation, while air traffic control immediately rerouted aircraft to ensure safety. Recordings captured air traffic controllers issuing urgent warnings to pilots, instructing them to "Pull up and go around, pull up and go around immediately."
Police arrived on the scene within minutes, at 4:41 p.m., and took the 53-year-old individual into custody. The incident caused a brief disruption to airport operations, though normal activity has since resumed. No injuries were reported as a result of the event.
Charges Filed and Investigation Underway
The Abbotsford man is now facing charges of dangerous operation of a vehicle and mischief. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances that led to the motorhome driving onto the airport runway. Abbotsford International Airport is located approximately 70 kilometers inland from Vancouver International Airport.
