Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum will attend Sunday’s World Cup final in New Jersey after accepting a direct invitation from U.S. President Donald Trump, marking their first meeting since December.
The leaders’ relationship has been strained by disputes over security and trade, including the U.S. decision not to extend the USMCA trade pact beyond its current term. Their last in-person encounter came at the World Cup draw in December.
World Cup Final Tickets and High-Profile Guests
Sheinbaum skipped the tournament’s opening match in Mexico City, where her national team defeated South Africa 2-0, instead giving her ticket to a young Indigenous woman. By Saturday, the cheapest seats for the final on FIFA’s site neared $10,000.
She confirmed her attendance in remarks to Mexican media, noting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will also be present. Spain’s King Felipe VI is expected to join as defending champions Argentina face Spain for the title.
Trade Talks to Follow World Cup Final
U.S. and Mexican officials are scheduled to meet two days after the final for bilateral trade negotiations. The World Cup is being co-hosted by the U.S., Mexico, and Canada for the first time.
