A Canadian NATO intern has been arrested by Belgian police on suspicion of espionage on behalf of a third country, the Belgian Federal Prosecutor’s Office confirmed on Friday. The woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, was taken into custody following searches at her home and workplace near Mons, where NATO’s strategic command, Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), is based.
Investigation and charges
The suspect, described as a Canadian national of Chinese origin, faces allegations of spying and membership in a criminal organization. Belgian authorities conducted raids on Thursday before an investigative judge ordered her arrest the following day. The prosecutor’s office stated that the case remains under active investigation, with no further details provided about the third country allegedly involved.
NATO’s SHAPE command, located approximately 60 kilometres southwest of Brussels, confirmed the intern had come to the attention of security services but insisted the incident had not compromised operational readiness. “At this time, there is no indication that NATO or SHAPE operational readiness, command and control arrangements, or ongoing tasks have been adversely affected,” said Martin O’Donnell, SHAPE spokesperson, in a statement.

The arrest underscores the persistent threat of espionage targeting Western military alliances. While NATO’s headquarters is in Brussels, SHAPE serves as the alliance’s central command for military operations, making it a potential target for intelligence-gathering efforts.
