Telemundo has secured the Spanish-language US broadcast rights for all UEFA men’s club competitions, including the Champions League, for three seasons beginning in 2027-28. The deal, announced Sunday, covers live matches across NBCUniversal’s platforms, including Peacock, Universo, and Telemundo Deportes Ahora.

Expansion of UEFA competition coverage

The agreement encompasses the Champions League, widely regarded as the world’s most prestigious club tournament, alongside the Europa League, Conference League, and Super Cup. NBCUniversal, Telemundo’s parent company, will deliver comprehensive coverage through its broadcast, streaming, and digital channels.

Strategic move following World Cup success

Cesar Conde, chairman of NBCUniversal News Group, noted that the World Cup “revealed” rather than created the US soccer audience, with premium competitions like the Champions League offering a natural next step. Telemundo’s World Cup coverage drew record audiences, including a 147% viewership increase through the semifinals compared to 2022.

Luis Fernández, chairman of NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises, emphasized the company’s focus on live television, citing soccer’s broad appeal. Telemundo already holds rights to the Premier League, Bundesliga, Olympics, and US national team matches, among others.

Record-breaking viewership trends

Telemundo’s World Cup broadcasts achieved historic highs, with 11.4 million viewers for Argentina’s semifinal win over England—the most-watched Spanish-language semifinal ever. Spain’s victory over France attracted 9.8 million, while the US match in the round of 16 drew 50 million across all broadcasters, the most-watched non-NFL event this century.

Aleksander Čeferin, UEFA president, stated that the agreement reflects the strength of UEFA competitions and the passion of Spanish-speaking fans in the US.
