A British pub landlady was shot dead in broad daylight in Trinidad and Tobago on July 5, with police yet to make any arrests in the case. Elaine McGowan, 65, was killed outside her godfather’s home in Trincity, leaving her husband and villagers in her former Kent community in shock.

For context, McGowan had been embroiled in a bitter family dispute over her late father’s estate, which was left to his new partner instead of her and her sister. She had also faced tensions with locals in Saltwood, where she ran a pub until last summer.

Broad daylight assassination in Trinidad

Footage captured the moment a silver Nissan stopped near McGowan’s godfather’s home, with an assassin stepping out and firing three shots from a 9mm handgun before fleeing. McGowan was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, while her husband, Ian McGowan, survived the attack unharmed.

Trinidad and Tobago police have not confirmed a motive but are appealing for public information. The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) stated it is supporting McGowan’s family and liaising with local authorities.

Family inheritance dispute and village tensions

McGowan’s father, George Butcher, a Trinidadian landowner, died in July 2023, leaving his estate—including a 24km coastal stretch—to his new girlfriend, not his daughters. Records suggest his will was updated just a month before his death, blindsiding McGowan and her sister, Joanne Butcher.

In Saltwood, Kent, where McGowan ran The Castle Hotel, locals described her and her husband as unpopular. The pub, once a community hub, saw declining patronage under their management, with reports of early closures, alcohol license issues, and conflicts with staff and customers.

Final months before the killing

After leaving the pub, the McGowans lived in a campervan parked near their former business. They had traveled to Trinidad in early 2024 to resolve the inheritance dispute, with McGowan reportedly expressing fears for her safety before the trip.

Her sister, Joanne Butcher, paid tribute, stating: “Elaine, myself and my cousins grew up in South London in the 60s, and our parents always believed in the values of family and community.”

Investigations into McGowan’s killing are ongoing, with no arrests made as of yet. Her husband remains in Trinidad but is expected to return to the UK soon.
